WHITE DWARF: SPEARHEAD EXPANSION REVIEW!!!

So, I recently got white dwarf and went to look at the new spearhead expansion for 40K here are the key points:
  1. no minimum requirements
  2. up to one spearhead of each type
  3. you can take an army entirely of spearheads.
  4. Three new deployments and missions.
  5. most of the rules in mag but all the extra bits on games workshop website.
  6. troops, tanks, walkers, spearheads but not if they a have rule saying specifically against this or are a swarm can score. Troops meaning any unit taken from a army's troops allowance.
  7. You always play longways across the table.
  8. dice off to be attacker, attacker goes first and deploys first.
Spearheads: formations you take, everybody has access to the same ones (at least at the moment) for instance:
Tanks hunter spearhead:
up to 3 tank or walker units, all vehicles in spearhead get tank hunter USR.

Deployments: counter attack-divide board in half then from each player table edge corners draw a triangle the point 9'' away from the centre so it makes a hourglass shape with a gap between the 2 triangles, deep strike infiltrate and scout can be placed in reserve + up to half your army can be.
Cauldron: both players have 18'' deployment zones so start 36'' away same amounts for deployment as above.
Escalation: players start 18'' apart you can only put down 1 spearhead or 3 units down, all else in reserve, can infiltrate as long as you don't go over the above allowance.

Missions: Breakthrough: you score 1 point for each unit at least partially in you opponents half of the board at the end of the game, whoever has the most wins.
Vital Ground: 1 vital objective and 3 minor, vital worth 3 points, minor worth 1, one player puts vital in one half, other player puts minor in other half, all at ground level, not within 12 of another objective, wrecked super heavies become a minor objective for your opponent have to be within 3'' with no enemy to claim an objective, whoever has most points at end of game wins!
Lightning war: 3 objectives placed alternately 24'' away from each other plus an extra 5, one within 18 of table centre and one within 18 of each table edge, wrecked super heavies become objectives for opponent as before, same rules for capturing objectives as before, whoever has most objectives wins.

Overall a very good supplement and I would definitely recommend getting this issue as it is great!!!
Thanks for reading,

Jacob.

White Dwarf: 364, mini round-up.

I have found that the full reviews of white dwarf are a little long and not many people read them so I will just round up the bits that interest ME.

Battle report: Is a good game that shows off the new models as you would expect but whilst the armies are not broken they are pretty hard and the game doesn't seem overly 'perfect' so it looks like it wasn't 'fudged'.

Old war stories: This is one of my favourite articles and it talks about scenario gaming. Then it gives us one scenario and how a game went. The other guy will do the same next month and they will decide on a winner.

Move and fire: this months tactics article is about gunlines both magic and shooty in fantasy and how they work. It also includes a standard dark elf power army from last year. Overall very good to be honest.

Masterclass: The painting masterclass is ace this month. It teaches NMM gold really well.

Army masters: a great looking if bright vampire counts doubles army that has plenty of conversions.

Standard bearer: Jervis talks about banner designs and what looks right. Very nice!

Battlefield challenge: This months challenge is duel and involves 2 characters fighting it out in the middle of the board to the death. the armies end up quite close together because of a movement special rule allowing them to surge forward. Both characters in the duel have killing blow for the game and the winner gets first turn which often allows for first turn charges. Quite interesting really.

White Dwarf: #360, The end of the year and a big spanking fortress.

Hi, jacob here. Just thought I'd do my review of the latest issue of white dwarf. I'm experimenting with jump breaks too. To view the full post you must click on the post title otherwise you will only see up to where I mark! Anyway, on with the review:

In this issue:

A year in review.

Moddleling workshop special.
Masterclas on vermin lord.

Looks good to me. Anyway, on with the proper bit:

Editorial: just the guy talking about the year and how great it's been. Quite nice.

New releases:
The fortress of redemption. Looks amaxing but is £60 which I can't currently afford.
Space marine megaforce. A pred, a rhino, dread, 20 tac marines, 5 assaulters, 5 sniper scouts. £100. Looks like a good deal if you add up the cost.
Ork megaforce. 40 boyz, 9 warbikers, trukk, 5 lootas/burnas. Don't know how good this is. £100
Empire brigade. 40 state troops, 10 greatswords, 8 knights, 20 handgunners/crossbowmen, 5 outriders/pisoliers, great cannon/mortar. Again £100. Quite like this. Looks good!
Orc and Goblin Brigade. 38 boyz, 10 black orcs, 40 night goblins, 10 spider riders, 10 wolf riders, orc boar chariot. £100. Sounds pretty sweet.
I like these deals expecially around christmas.
Realm of battle game board extensions, basically two pretty plain pieces to make your board 8ft by 4ft. £55. Bit expensive.
Army Figure cases. Both 40k and fantasy are £60. Just the same but new! Looks OK.

Collectors range: Baby dragons. £15.  Might be good in objective games but really not that useful or characterful.
The chase.
A rerelase of the food chain, little squig, Goblin, Massive squig.
Do you get the idea. £7.Looks good an quite cheap.
Rerelease of fat of the witch king. £18. I really like this but a bit expensive. Very characterful!

Black Library:
The chronicles of malus darkblade: vol 2. At some point I want to read these but I have uh, 12 books and an audio book before then so maybe next year! My mate really likes these and says there is some humor. £9.99
Forged by chaos: a warhammer online book, looks OK not my thing. £6.99
Titanicus: 7.99. Finally, the paper back version. So much cheaper.
Thunder from Fenris. This is that audio book I want. Thunderwolf riders and zombies, what more could you want. £10.
Forge World: Kill Krusha, Awesome. Think leman russ looted to Terra, then a big mek got hold of it and made it ORKY. Really kool. No price.

White dwarf: No.359 review (the rat men are here) and 200th post!

COULDN'T FIND PIC OF THIS MONTHS FRONT COVER!!!

Hi, this is my 200th post and also this months white dwarf review. Sorry it's a bit late but i have been steeing up my new space wolf blog, check that out HERE. Anyway, on with the review:

In this white dwarf there is:
Design notes on Skaven
Rules for last months lord of the ring stuff in the strategy battle game
the second part of the Harad campaign
Some scenarios for fighting on Fenris and a little campaign for our space wolves
White dwarf sub in a box mini
New releases
news Standard bearer
A new battlefield challenge
The directory
Painting masters catch up with previous winners
Painting workshop: Easterlings
Army masters space wolves
Eavy metal korsarro khan
Battle for Grim Duraz battle rep

In the news we have the new skaven army book (duh)! 20 clan rats for £20, 20 storm vermin for£30, screaming bell/plauge furnace for £35, the doomwheel for £20, queek headtaker for £8, Deathmaster snikch for £8, the battalion consisting of: 40 clanrats, 20 plauge monks 2 rat ogres, 6giant rats and 3 packmasters for £55.

From the black library we have liber chaotica 2009, blood pact by dan abnett, the sequel to scourge the heretic calles innocence proves nothing and the empire army series continues with iron company.

Nothing new from forge world.

Tyranids are confirmed and there is a new creature well many new creatures (like we didn't know). A couple of other odd bits like the old old giant being found and warhammer invasion the card game.

Weblore which is basically an advert for the Gw site.

Christmas wish lists now open for use. Along with the win a battalion or battle force for finding independant retailers.

Now onto the real articles, the verminous hoard, this is the design notes, gives lots of clear pics of the minis which is nice. Other tan that what you would expect really, the detailed look at sprues is of clan rats and there are NO repeats in this box. Shows that thought went into this book and also suggests some tactics. there is also a bit of a look at the war machines the Skaven have to offer. A bit of a tutorial on painting Skaven, looks good and relatively simple.

In saurons sinister service are the LoTR SBG rules for last months models. Looks good and was a good fun read.

Blood and sand pt2 sees us catch up with the contenders and shows some very inspiring pics, take a look even if you don't read it! Scenarios for next month look promising!

Battle for the fang, basically what i said before, some rules for fighting on fenris and some cool scenarios. the fluff is eccelent and i want to play with some of these.

A view of the battleforces is next, meh.

The battle report. this is very interesting and the scenario make the two large skaven armies bicker as well as fight the dwarfs to control just 1 tower which spurts out random death. run by a game master this scenario is all about getting into character and having fun.

the 3500 pt dwaf army has: Dwarf lord, rune lord, rune smith, thane, thane, dragon slayer, 20x2 warriors, 20 long beards, 10 thunderers, 10 thunderers, 10 quarrelers, 18 hammerers, 20 slayers, 20 miners, grudge thrower, cannon, organ gun, flame cannon.
The skaven army was packed full of toys with 2 doomwhells, a plague furnace and a bel, all in 2 2000 point armies. Both were centred around big blocks of clan rats and plague monks respectively.

The battle was a good read with the bickering between the two skaven generals getting phychal and in game. i won't spoil it for you but it was close!!!

Standard bearer is all about our hobby being hard to acces, niche, effort and time consuming and him thinking that's a good thing because it stops people with no enthusiasm from coming in also he say GW will never do pre painted stuff.

The new white dwarf model in grombrindle in SPACE, cool but a bit, meh! a little tutorial on how to paint him as well.

the new battlefield challenge looks to be interesting, it's called dawn raid basically up a point is night fight and the defender starts with objectives the attacker has a small advantage, who ever has most objectives wins!!!

the painting masters is fantastic! we catch up with some of the best from other white dwarfs and there is some fantastic painting. you need to see it to belive it!!!

Easterling tutorial is good and useful tips on many tecniques!

Space wolves army look is just plain cool with lots of battle dammage!!!

Kor'sarro Kahn mini tutorial is cool but the white tips are eccelent, it tells you how to get a warm, neutral and cold white well!!!

next there is a little look at some marine special characters. Cool stuff!

the rest is a load of adverts. Fortress of redemption next month!

Overall a really nice white dwarf, very impressed!

Adverts for space wolves/marines

Next up, legions of the eye, this is the designers notes on the new WOTR minis. Looks quite good and a nice read.

Bood and Sand: This is the campaign between gondor and harad. It's a cool looking campagn and the scenari packs are interesting with a mix of WOTR and LOTR. Also ther are pics of some of the armies.

Mighty heroes mighty deads: This is an editorial on heroes in warhammer and how special characters can change your army. Should be a good read for 40k players too. Some nice armies are in there as well.

Now for the battle report: This month it is called: the wrath of the storm caller. this sweet battle report is about chaos v space wolves. the game is 3 objectives, pitched battle. here are the armies, (the chaos were allowed 4 HQ's for a bit more fun:

The battle was really good. i won't spoil it for you this time though. But basically the four space wolf heroes clashed with some form of daemons each. It was really cool to see some of them in action. tell me if you want more information.

Hobby essentials: This month there are some great tips on how to use modelling snow. 1 is basing, 2 is mixing with paint water and water effets to create wet looking mud and 3 is used on water for froth.

adverts on tools of the trade.

Standard bearer: Jervis talks about how fun painting nights are and how to organise them. Good fun as usual.

Super interchangeble space wolves: A look at the space wolf sprues, nicely laid out as usual. then ther is an atricle on converting and kit bashing the space wolves. It really shows you how to get milege out of the sprues. then they do the same to tanks.

Now comes the hall of fame: this month Dave Thomas chooses GUI LE GROS, here is a pic:As you can see it is a nice mini. Dave says he loves it for it's simplicity and character. As well as it's little details. Look on google images for more details. Dave also like Gui's friends Hugo le petit and bertrand the brigand but likes Gui most. Michel 9the sculptor) was very supprised as he had almost forgotten the mini and sculpted him in a very short time. he says the barrel took ages.

Eavy metal masterclass, wolf guard: here is a really good tutorial on how to paint wolf guard or as in this issue, lukas the trickster. lots of good tips here and quite a simple way to paint power armour. in fact, most of the tecniques are simple and only have 3 stages. Bubonic brown was the base for the yellow! really nice stuff.

Master modelers: this is an article all about the amazing terrain the studio has. It's got some great tips in and all of it looks really good. Nice to see some more terrain tutorials.

and that's about it. Skaven next month.

Thanks for reading everyone, please leave a review and tell me if you want something in more detail. Hope you enjoyed it.

Thanks for reading,

Jacob

White Dwarf: Monthly review: Issue 357

Hi, time for the first monthly review of white dwarf. The review will be once a month (DUH!).

This months issue is issue 357, it's main release is Space Hulk which I'm sure you have all heard about. if not then check out FTW.

First up is the new releases section apart from space hulk there is:

Iron hand stracken and gunnery sergeant harker out for £8 each. Looks good. there is also the long awaited Azhag on his wyvern model out. this looks really neat and I wish I could affford it cause it's £50. There is also dead and burned grass out now along with a new basing kit. Both look good and I migh end up getting some of that burned grass.
the blood slaughterer from forge world is also out and it looks huge.
2 new books out this month, Salamander and Empire. I think I will pick up salamander at games day and then give it a review. it looks really good and was spoken about by the author (Nick Kyme) On worlds end radio.
A metal eagle bitz pack is out aswell. Plus skaven is now confirmed to be out in November.

Next in line is the designers notes on space hulk, you can find reviews of the game all over the web but this actually gives you a good insight on the game and the motives behind it. No clue on why it's on limeted release though. Nice pics of the contents of the box including the floor pices. All the stuff is debossed giving it a nice detail. Then there is a bit of background on each of the space marines which is actually really good. Finally is more designers notes on the genestealers.

Now comes a really detailed mission report of one game of space hulk. Which the Spaceies win. It's actually a good report of the game and Jervis does a really good job explaining the game and pointing out tactics to the un-informed. the battle was close and you really gotthe feel of the tention the SM's are put under because of the 3 min timer.

The last bit on space hulk is an eavy metal masterclass in painting the power sword sergeant. A really cool thing was how the crux terminatus and the gold was painted. the white on the cloak was really good aswell because it was built up from cathalan brown through vomit the bleached bone then bleached bone and skull white then pure skull white.

The next part of the issue is called between a rok and a hard place which is the final part of the report started last month on a big planetary empiers campaign played in the studio. they gave quick reviews on the most exciting bits and we got pics Dave Andrews board that was actually an ork space ship that you could play on! Really great read. In amongst the report was a look at Andrew Kenrick's salllies army which consisted of: One or two dev squads, a load of tac marines, two dreads, a reedeemer, some termies and Vulkan. It may have more but thats all thats in the pics. the other army is the world eaters terminator company from Wade Pryce. Which was full of termies (of course), Angron, a lord, 2 daemon princes, a pred and 2 oblits. A really nice army and very well painted. You also got a mini battle report (like 4 pages long) which was of one of the climatic apoc battles.

After that section was double trouble which was a report of a doubles touny that a load of guys from the studio went to. It was a good fun read and I really enjoyed it. It was full of mini reviews of games. Andy Hall (who wrote the report) and Robert Purser's list was:

Warrior priest, two handed hammer, light armour, barded warhorse, icon of magnus.
Lvl 1 battle wizard, 2xscrolls
High elf nobel, gret eagle, dragon armour, lance, reaver bow, enchanted shield.
10 handgunners
10 handgunners
9 knights, preceptor, standard
10 sea guard
great cannon
5 dragon princes, standard, lion standard
1 lion chariot
bolt thrower.

Andrew kenrick and Glen More's list was:
Exalted hero, khorne, jugger, biting blade
warlock engineer, warp blades, energy condenser, warp power, accumulator, scroll
warlock engineer, as before but without storm daemon
5 chaos knights, FC, Tzeentch, blasted standard
5 Marauder horse, throwing spears
5 marauder horse, throwing spears
18 marauders, shields, light armour, standard, musician
24 clan rats, FC, spears
10 night runners, slings
5 gutter runners, poisoned weps
5 jezzails
warp lightning cannon.
Overall this section was good and I hope to see more tourny reps in the future.

Next up was heroes of the catachan which gave you a bit of background on stracken and harker plus a rubbish tactica basically telling you there rules then stating the obvious. I won't go into detail because I have told you most of it already.

Next was a little section giving you abit of background on Azhag and telling you his rules.

Now for the battle report. Which, for this month, was not fudged! It was between Ben Curry and Ben Johnson from Bad Dice and it was in the style of a tournament game. You could tell it was either very well fudged (I.E. you didn't notice) or it was for real. I am going to choose to belive it was real as I don't think Ben and Ben woul let themselves to drawn into the fudging. All in all it was a great game between Dark Elves and Orcs and Gobbos (not with azhag which also helps me to belive there was no fudging). The whole game was tight and action packed with people making mistakes and bad things happening. In the end it was just a great game.

Now for my favorite article, Standard Bearer. This months article was about scenarios and was really good. I like scenarios and have played a few. Also this month there was the first in a series of battlefield challenges, this months was for fantasy though there will be some for other game systems. It was called forced march. I won't tell you how it worked unless people want me to. if you do then please comment.

Next was the hobby essentials where we have new brass leaves and a new basing kit (mentioned before).

Now, in this issue instead of painting masters we had army masters in the form James Karch's Ultramarines,I must say the whole army looks beautyful and every model is converted in one way or another. Even if it is putting knee pads on the scouts to match Telion or converting all the bolter magazines on the tac marines.

Last we have the floor plan of games day and a quick review of what will happen.

Next month is Space Wolves and I for one am looking forward to it.

In conclusion i am looking forward to White Dwarf more and more and this issue was great, I am seriously saying that you might want to pick this one up.

Thanks for reading,

Jacob out.

Painting: LoTR and orks.

Ok, I don't have pics yet but I do have some news.

Orks: I have started painting my warboss, I don't know what to call him yet though. The whole ork clan will either be called the Blood ----- (-= insert name) or the skull smashers, any ideas?

LoTR: Right, so me and my mate will eventually get into LoTR (after I have done marines, got a decent amount od Orks and Warriors of chaos (my fantasy army)) I have already painted Legolas and Merry which I got free from a mate and I may slowly build my collection.

Fantasy: Like above I have decided to get some Warriors of Chaos.

40k: Marines are proceding, I need to finish a tac squad then prime and paint 2 rhinos, 2 speeders, 5 assault marines and 5 scouts then Marines are finsihed and I can move onto orks and WoC.

Friday, 19 December 2008

Archon campaign: Another game/ White Dwarf: lots.

Archon campaign: OK, so I played another game today against the guard player Stu, it was a 910 point game were I used my 5 man term squad, a cappy, 5 sterns, 15 marines and a missile launcher dev squad. I really enjoyed using the devs, they did a good job at popping lemans, the termies did great as well. Best of all was the Stens, they ate threw the 10 tac marines I had lent hi and did some serious damage to other stuff, I will definitely use them a lot.

Now the scoring stands like this:

Marines: played 4 won 3 drew 1 Lost 0

Necrons: played 1 won 0 drew 1 lost0

guard: played 3 won 0 drew 0 lost 3

White Dwarf: I have got my grubby little hands on about 30 old mags, ranging from about 270 to 310 I don't have all of them but it is nice to read some of the old stuff, the best thing is that it was for free.

White Dwarf: Finally got it.

After waiting a month calling GW then the second coppy being late, so I end up waiting a month and a half. I have finally got White Dwarf. It looks good and the how to paint Space-Marines section is usefull, I am going to get some more paints so I can start hilighting, layering and washing as I am relitively new to painting I do not know all the trick the rest of you do so I am trying out different things.
